You're fired!

The other day a patient's mother fired me from her (adult) daughter's care.  It's the first time in 11 years of labor & delivery that that's ever happened to me.  This patient's mom had a 'tude from the beginning and fired me in the first 3 minutes because I asked the patient to explain to me why she came into triage (instead of the mother explaining) which infuriated her mother.  She told me I was the second nurse in a row who had been rude to her.  I gladly got her a different nurse seeing as though we were not going to get along, but not after asking her, "Do you fire all of your nurses?"

This lead me to write my missionary son, Cole, and let him know that no matter what you do or how good you may be, people may not like you.  It's nothing you've done, it's something they've already shown up with.  It was my "pearl" (of wisdom) for him.  I don't hand out too many pearls, that's why they're called pearls, 'cause it's a rare thing.
